Reading | Lust without rules? Sex, clichés & the right not to give a fuck

BiBerlin invites you to a reading by authors Beata Absalon and Bianca Jankovska, featuring a panel discussion and Q&A at Metis Books & Café!

We at the Bi+ Competence Centre are looking forward to an inspiring evening with you, our community, and authors Beata Absalon and Bianca Jankovska. The two will be reading from their books

  • Not giving a fuck. Von lustlosem Sex und sexloser Lust
  • Fuckgirl: Ein radikal feministischer Roman über Selbstermächtigung, Sex und Wut

In the panel discussion that follows, we’ll hear their perspectives on the following topics, among others, before you can put your own questions or discussion points to the authors in the Q&A.

  • How do gender roles affect our sex lives – and is queerness a way out of other discomforts with heterosexuality?
  • Have you distanced yourselves from certain gender roles? If so, how? What have you gained or lost in the process?
  • To what extent are gender roles and sexual identity linked? What does this mean for all Bi+ people?
  • Sex – the good, the bad, the ugly? What is sex? What does sex positivity or negativity mean? What role do kinks, feminism or the freedom to choose not to have sex sometimes play in this?

Places are limited, so please register via a free ticket and arrive on time so as not to disrupt the reading. Please also remember to return your ticket if you are unable to attend, so that we can pass your place on to the waiting list. You can register here via Eventbrite.

Would you like to support the authors, our association or the bookshop? Follow us via the social media links. Both books can be purchased on the spot at Metis Books and Café!

The panel will be moderated by Lea Holzfurtner, (she/her) clinical sexologist and board member of BiBerlin e.V.

Metis Books & Café in Prenzlauer Berg: a queer, multilingual bookshop with a café run by Darío and Bruno (he/him).

Feel free to come hungry – at Metis you can buy wonderful homemade focaccia and fantastic coffee creations, among other things. (Note from the person typing this event description: You absolutely must try the Shakerato coffee!!)

Entry to the reading is free – but we’re always grateful for a donation to the association!

Doors open at 6.30 pm for a relaxed arrival and chance to get to know each other, and the reading starts at 7.00 pm.

Access via a mobile ramp is easily facilitated by a member of staff managing entry at the door. Unfortunately, there are no toilets available for people with mobility impairments. We apologise for this.

The event will be held in German.

And now to the wonderful authors:

Bianca Jankovska knew as early as the age of 13 that she wanted to write – and she’s stuck with it. Her writing blends essayistic reflection with literary storytelling, taking readers into intimate realms ranging from family and relationships to sexuality and trauma. In 2018, she published her first book, “Das Millennial-Manifest”; this was followed in 2020 by “Dear Girlboss, we are done”. “Potenziell furchtbare Tage” was published in 2024. Today, Bianca still loves nothing more than talking about feminist life and pop culture on her Substack and on her YouTube channel “Groschenphilosophin”. “Fuckgirl” is Bianca Jankovska’s debut novel. A radically feminist novel about self-empowerment, sex and anger.

Beate Absalon works as a cultural studies scholar specialising in contemporary sexual culture. Combining theory with practice, she offers workshops on forms of sexual play under the label “luhmen d’arc”, in which she gives playful attention to ambiguities, socio-political contexts and non-cathartic feelings (such as awkwardness, shyness and laziness). Beate completed her MA in Cultural Studies at Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis on the aesthetic and cultural-theoretical analysis of bondage practices. She is currently working on her PhD on the facilitation of consent practices using queer-feminist workshop formats. In 2024, her debut non-fiction book “Not giving a fuck. Von lustlosem Sex und sexloser Lust” was published by the Viennese publisher Kremayr & Scheriau.
